Bricks and Mortar construction of Sea Urchin spines

We are interested in the nanostructure of calcite (NERC NEI019514-1) and related materials and at the moment are trying to grow carbonate nanoshells around gold nanoparticles. SERS results suggest that we are beginning to get there! A recently published study [1] on the nature of the sea urchin spine shows a nanostructure involving “bricks” of calcite crystals embedded in an amorphous calcium carbonate “mortar”. Our work may provide an interesting way to monitor the development of exactly this sort of material.
